Our Story
Our facility is located in Grand Marais, MN, overlooking the beautiful north shore of Lake Superior. Our organization is part of the Cook County Hospital District, and includes:
- Critical access hospital
- Emergency Room and Ambulance service
- A variety of diagnostic and therapeutic services
- Skilled nursing facility
- Home Health agency
Also located on the healthcare campus, Sawtooth Mountain Clinic offers a variety of community health services and a full-service pharmacy.
The hospital originally opened for business in 1958 as a county-owned facility. In the 1960’s, the first wing of the original care center was constructed, followed by a second wing in the early 1970’s. At the time, it was called Cook County North Shore Hospital & Care Center.
In 1990, the Hospital and Care Center were re-organized under Minnesota statutes to become a hospital district with taxing authority – which meant more funding to secure essential equipment, and ensure continued growth of the organization.
Today, North Shore Health continues to provide quality rural healthcare services to this resilient and active community. Our compassionate staff truly cares about serving our patients and residents with pride and integrity.
The hospital district is governed by a five-member elected Board of Directors, who oversee all operations with the Administrative staff to ensure that North Shore Health continues to provide the highest level of patient care.
As the only hospital and care center in Cook County, we encompass a large and diverse service area. Our patients include not only year-round and seasonal residents; we also serve the many people who visit Cook County and the BWCA recreation area.
