From Meghan Flynn, Education Coordinator:
North Shore Health hosted the Comprehensive Advanced Life Support (CALS) course on November 29th and 30th. CALS in Grand Marais was the launch of the CALS Hybrid on-line/in-person learning platform. The course was attended by 23 participants including providers, RNs and Paramedics. The attendees represented North Shore Health: Cook Hospital, EssentiaHealth Ely, EssentiaHealth St. Mary's (Duluth, MN), Lake View Memorial Hospital (Two
Harbors, MN), Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital (Grand Rapids, MN), Norton Sound Health Corp (Nome, Alaska), EssentiaHealth Northern Pines (Aurora, MN) and Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital. Providing leading-edge and evidence-based medical information and skills, CALS curriculum addresses the broad educational needs of doctors, advanced practitioners, nurses and paramedics working in rural, remote and global emergency departments.
The CALS mission is improving patient care by providing advanced life support education to rural and/or resource limited healthcare professionals. They are committed to improving rural medical care by providing education designed for locations with infrequent emergency experiences, limited specialized personnel, and/or technological support. They operate under the values that each member of the healthcare team provides value.
Throughout the two day course, participants rotated through learning instruction and practice stations. Hands on training and instruction from current professionals was provided. Attendees practiced helmet removal, bleeding control, trauma patient assessment with use of Ultrasound, OB deliveries and emergencies, neonatal, pediatric and adult emergencies and much more. Two days packed with so many topics that help with learning and hands on practice of essential medical information, skills and patient care.
Thank you to all who attended, for the instructors of the course and to all the support of the North Shore Health staff. With 24 more people walking the halls and using the facility in an already low staff situation, please know that your efforts are appreciated. A special thanks to Dietary, Housekeeping, Patient Access and Maintenance. Thank you for helping to make all of the participants feel welcome and well fed!
