Investing in Training, Investing in Our Crew
Prior to 2023, our EMTs did not have the variance to obtain IVs, IOs (drilling into the bone for fluid/medication administration/access), draw labs, or provide fluids such as normal saline, 10% dextrose, etc.
We’ve worked hard to expand the scope of practice for our EMTs and it’s been paying off out in the field as well as in the emergency department.
We start with training our new EMTs on the arm & hand manikin, then they head over to shadow and work with lab and outpatients. From there, they work on securing IV access on fellow staff in a controlled environment. Once graduated from that, they move onto rolling ambulance training where it all becomes more dynamic and interesting. After they’re signed off on those trainings, they start assisting in the ER and out in the field with real patients.
Investing the time and training in our crew members is top priority at NSH EMS.
After all, a capable, confident team means better, more efficient patient care for our community.
