Congratulations to Jon Moe MS, RN, PHN, Education Coordinator for North Shore Health!
Jon was the proud recipient of the MHA Pipelines and Partnerships award at the April 17, 2023 MHA Inaugural Workforce Innovation Conference held in Brooklyn Center, MN.
Jon has been the lead on two major education initiatives at North Shore Health that has a direct impact on bringing individuals into the workforce, Emergency Medical Services education and Nursing Assistant testing.
Jon was the site lead on a pilot project with the Minnesota Department of Health to allow nursing assistant candidates to be tested locally. This pilot projected required recruitment of individuals needed to fill specific roles in the testing environment, oversight of space remodeling to meet testing requirement, along with training and reporting of results. This was the smallest and most remote of all sites in the pilot. Three individuals were tested during the pilot. This removed the barrier of the individuals needing to travel more than two hours to a site that had previously done the testing.
Jon is currently working on an initiative to bring education for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) and Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) to the local level. EMS staffing has been at a crisis level and individuals who have a desire to become EMTs or EMRs have faced barriers of finding programs that are flexible around employment and do not require frequent travel of great distances. The EMT initial course has been launched, with a cohort of five students in the first course. The course has been designed around a hybrid learning format. The on-line component allows the student the flexibility of studying when they have the time, yet has time-frame requirements for finishing content. Hands-on skills sessions with an instructor and supervised clinical experiences complete the program.
The EMS education programs have required working with the Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Review Board (EMSRB) to receive program approval and ensure that all state and federal training requirements are met. Additionally, there will be further collaboration with the EMSRB to be sure that the national registry practical test component can be done locally. Collaborative work has also been done with Cook County Higher Education to ensure that a site is available for the proctored test component of the national registry exam. Additional collaboration has been with the North Shore Healthcare Foundation for the purchase of a trauma simulation manikin.
