North Shore Health Named Top Critical Access Hospital
for Two Years in a Row

North Shore Health (NSH) in Grand Marais, MN was recently named one of the top 20 critical access hospitals (CAHs) in the country for patient satisfaction. This marks the second year in a row that NSH has been honored with this distinction.

NSH scored best among CAHs as determined by the Chartis Center for Rural Health, based on data compiled in the Chartis Rural Health Performance INDEX™, specifically the patient satisfaction domain. The rankings were recently announced by the National Rural Health Association (NRHA). An awards ceremony will be held during NRHA’s Critical Access Hospital Conference in September in Kansas City, Mo.

The “Patient Perspective INDEX” uses the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Measures. All hospitals in the study are evaluated across all 10 HCAHPS domains. Each hospital’s performance across these 10 metrics is aggregated and ranked against rural peers nationally. The Top 20 CAHs are recognized for the outstanding patient satisfaction they provide. This group was selected from the Chartis Center for Rural Health’s 2024 top 100 CAH list, which was released earlier this year.

The top 20 CAH best practice recipients have achieved success in one of two key areas of performance:

Patient perspective index: A rating of hospital performance based on the percentile rank across all 10 HCAHPS domains.

Quality index: A rating of hospital performance based on the percentile rank across rural-relevant process of care measures.

“North Shore Health is proud of the efforts of our staff whose work and dedication contributed to NSH earning this recognition,” says Kimber Wraalstad, NSH CEO. “Being named one of the top 20 critical access hospitals in the country for patient satisfaction for two years running means that we are serious about our mission, Community Access to Compassionate Care. We are committed to delivering the exceptional healthcare services that our community needs now and in the future.”
